Scottish Waste & Resources Conference 2008
7th – 8th October 2008, Glasgow Hilton Hotel
Debating the future of waste in Scotland
Richard Lochhead, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs & the Environment, will be giving the keynote speech at the Scottish Waste & Resources Conference 2008 in October, at a crucial time in the development of Scotland’s strategic approach to waste.
With the Scottish Government currently consulting on its ambitions for a ‘zero waste’ Scotland, this will be the overarching theme of the 2-day conference, closely linked with carbon, energy, planning, and wider resource management to reflect the fact that the waste sector is expanding rapidly beyond its traditional boundaries.
Combining a focus on household waste on the first day and commercial and industrial waste on the second, the event will provide delegates with insight into the key elements of the Government’s plans, including the implications for both rural and urban areas and the role of residual waste energy and heat.
A tried and tested conference format will provide a pick-and-mix choice of over 30 conference sessions on a wide range of topical issues, including waste infrastructure and funding, food waste, public/private sector contracts, and markets for recycled materials. Delegates will also have the chance to help shape the future of Scotland’s waste strategy in a series of National Waste Management Plan Consultation Workshops organised by the Scottish Government.
The event also includes an indoor exhibition and the Scottish Waste Management Industry Awards Dinner, which will take place on the evening of Wednesday 8th October 2008 at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow. Attended by leading figures from local authorities, private sector organisations, professional bodies and regulators from across Scotland, the awards dinner provides the perfect venue to acknowledge outstanding achievements in the waste sector in Scotland. The awards include Best Private Sector Initiative, Best Local Authority Initiative, Best Community Sector Initiative, and Best Non-Waste Management Sector Initiative.
More details on the event and the awards, which are still open for applications, can be found at www.scotwaste.org. A number of free press passes are available for the event from pat.jennings@ciwm.co.uk
