Press Release

Final call for CIWM Professional Awards 2008

There is still time for waste management professionals to enter the CIWM Professional Awards, which are specifically designed to acknowledge and reward both individual and team achievement and also to encourage research and study into resources and wastes management, both in the UK and abroad.

CIWM PEEL People’s Cup: if your waste management facility is run by an excellent team that deserves national recognition, why not enter it for the CIWM PEEL People’s Cup.  The Cup is awarded for excellence in the operating team of a licensed or permitted waste management facility.  The scope of this award includes all types of waste treatment facilities, including MRFs, commercial scale composting operations, energy from waste facilities, and landfill sites.

The Judges look for excellence in site supervision, operational features, teamwork, staff welfare, safety, data management, local acceptability, environmental impact, aesthetics, and plant maintenance. More information can be found at http://www.ciwmawards.com/pma/3189

For those keen on foreign travel, meanwhile, there are two awards up for grabs:

• The James Sumner Award: this award comprises a bursary of up to £1000 to fund the expenses of a Student or Graduate CIWM Member attending a major international waste management conference. Recent previous winners have travelled to New York, Buenos Aries, Copenhagen and Sardinia.  More at http://www.ciwmawards.com/pma/3187

• The JC Dawes Bursary: open to Chartered Waste Managers (MCIWM and FCIWM), this bursary of £2000 is designed to fund travel and subsistence for a research or study programme into wastes management or related subjects in a country other than that in which the winner normally resides.

Previous winners have studied clinical waste segregation in Canada and Finland, construction and demolition waste in post-conflict Sri Lanka, and small resource recovery operations in Southern Africa. More at http://www.ciwmawards.com/pma/3188

The deadline for applications is March 1st 2008. Application forms and further information on these and the other CIWM Professional Awards can be found at www.ciwmawards.com
