CIWM commends Scotland’s ambitious approach but more detail is needed on delivery
The Scottish Government has set itself some very challenging targets to move Scotland towards ‘zero waste’ and the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has welcomed the strong commitment to recycling and diversion from landfill that these targets represent.
“The statement made yesterday also puts forward a very clear vision for the future of sustainable waste management in Scotland, and what the infrastructure will look like – providing a welcome degree of clarity for those tasked with developing the services and facilities that will be needed,” says Professor Jim Baird, chairman of the CIWM’s Scotland Centre.
“This sort of performance would put Scotland at the very top of the European league table, and it is to be commended for its ambitious approach,” said Chief Executive Steve Lee. “We look forward to hearing more detail about how this substantial change in behaviour will be delivered, including the resources that will be made available and level of central co-ordination. We would also like to see equally firm and clear proposals put forward for commercial and industrial waste.”
