SEVERN WASTE SERVICES SITE VISIT
THROCKMORTON, PERSHORE
Thursday 29th June 2006 @ 2.30pm
The visit to Severn Waste Services site in Throckmorton proved an interesting day for all involved. We were first given an overview of the company and how they came to be dealing with waste for Herefordshire & Worcestershire, the context of the services they provided and the future of the services they were hoping to deliver to the area.
Currently, Severn’s site in Throckmorton caters for non-hazardous landfill waste (including electricity generators driven by the resulting methane), an open windrow composting facility a MRF for paper, textiles, cans and plastics and a HHWRC. The group were taken on a tour of each of the facilities and talked through the processes involved at each stage. Fortunately we had blazing sunshine so we were able to spend most of our visit actually out on the site and see for ourselves the vast quantities of waste being thrown into landfill but also all the good work being carried out sorting and bulking up recyclables and the resulting compost being produced from the green waste area. Severn were proud to display their 60% recycling rate at the site which is due to all the hard work being carried out there, even scrap wood taken to the site is chipped and used to create access roads for vehicles up to the tipping sites!
