European disposal network
With its own plants and cooperation partners throughout Europe, CURRENTA has established a network that also offers British companies extensive opportunities for efficient cycle and waste disposal management. Chemical park operator CURRENTA will be presenting its European partner network for the first time at the FUTURESOURCE environmental trade fair. Disposal companies from five European countries are involved in the network, where waste streams are recycled (including thermal recycling). “The British waste disposal market is very attractive for us,” says head of marketing Michael Mross, explaining his expectations for the trade fair. “At FUTURESOURCE we hope to strike up discussions with waste disposal companies looking to join our network,” he adds. CURRENTA provides British companies with the possibility of disposing of hazardous waste in its own hazardous waste incinerators. In the European BREF document (Best Available Technique Reference Documents), CURRENTA's incinerators are listed as “global state of the art”. The incinerators recycle the heat generated by the combustion process as a conventional waste-to-energy plant. CURRENTA also has further technical possibilities for implementing closed material cycles. Contaminated sulfuric acid is cleaned in a sulfuric acid cracking plant and made reusable for chemical processes. CURRENTA partner Bayer Schering Pharma brings an iodine recovery plant and a distillation facility for specific solvents to the network. A partner company is being sought in the United Kingdom that is looking to add its own services, such as analytics, logistics and waste treatment, to the waste disposal network. In 2009, CURRENTA’s Environment Business Unit division disposed of, reused and recycled over one million metric tons of materials in its own facilities and those of its network partners. At the three CHEMPARK sites, 600 employees of CURRENTA Environment operate seven incineration plants, three wastewater treatment plants, two landfill sites, three collection centers for recyclable material and a cleaning plant for industrial containers.
